SmartTiles v5.8 Installer Cutoff Date: April 1st 2017

The March rollout of ActionTiles continues to progress smoothly, and we have declared this offspring of SmartTiles to be healthy, popular, and adorable!

Access to ActionTiles is still rationed via an email list for Invitation Code requests. This is to ensure the highest quality new user experiences. The turnaround for invitations has accelerated substantially – You should expect your invitation within 4 or 5 days at most.

We have just updated our SmartTiles Installation Page with a message of encouragement to sign-up for ActionTiles instead.

But… the ability to install SmartTiles is still available through April 1st, 2017 (i.e., the link to the SmartTiles SmartApp installer is live just for a couple more weeks). The SmartTiles Support / Help Desk will be closed after April 15th.

All currently installed instances of the “SmartTiles (Connect)” SmartApp (green, blue, and legacy editions) will remain operational until further notice. We know that you may have invested substantial effort in configuring your Dashboards and need time to switch over to ActionTiles. We have not set a road-map of providing various types of replacement functionality for the complex CSS customization features of SmartTiles. We hope to offer several compelling updates to ActionTiles before announcing SmartTiles’s final deprecation date. Please consider this to be your “far advance notice” of that eventuality.

Thank-you for your continued support! Please follow us on Twitter @ActionTiles and Facebook /ActionTiles, and our news page on ActionTiles.com/news.

ActionTiles Release Date: March 2017

We have been working very hard to re-engineer (and extensively Beta test!) your favorite smart home dashboard for the ultimate user experience, performance, security and growth. It is finally happening; you have been very patient, thank-you! :grimacing:

[Resolved] Outage: SmartTiles outage for some users after 11/9 SmartThings platform upgrade

Resolved: Nov 10, 2016 – 1830h UTC. (Opened: Nov 10, 2016 – 1600h UTC)

SmartTiles users were reporting problems launching and/or installing. We think this was caused by recent SmartThings “Platform Updates”, and affected other apps in addition to SmartTiles, but was quickly resolved by SmartThings operations.

Symptoms include:

  • SmartTiles Launcher may land on the SmartThings IDE/API webpage instead of the Dashboard.

  • Attempts to “Install” SmartTiles from the SmartTiles.click/install website may fail.

  • There is no workaround or fix at this time.

Please do not uninstall SmartTiles. It is unlikely to resolve this problem.
Please check back here from time to time, read updates on our News Page, and follow SmartTiles’s Twitter feed: @SmartTiles

SmartTiles v5.8: Announcement & Release Notes

SmartTiles v5.8.0 was deployed to Blue edition users this week.

SmartTiles now “Published”: What is the “Blue edition”?

  • SmartTiles was officially “reviewed and published” by SmartThings in mid-April to prepare for the disablement of the shared OAuth install method.
  • SmartTiles does not appear in the App “Marketplace” yet, but can be installed using SmartTiles.click/install.
  • Users who installed prior to publication are actually still running against the shared OAuth edition/stream.  We changed the icon and added a “-Blue” suffix to the version number. Blue edition users will receive new versions (like this v5.8) up to 3 weeks ahead of other users. More details in this Post.

Command calls all verified against device Tiles’ Capabilities.

  • In response to one of the concerns reported by security researchers, we made sure that only REST Endpoint calls (commands) which match the authorized Tile Capability type (e.g. lock/unlock, but not lock PIN code update…) are accepted by the SmartTiles SmartApp. In fact, only the Music Player Tile did not already have explicit command validation.

WeatherStation Tile scheduled refresh re-enabled.

  • Since the SmartThings Scheduler has been stabilized, we have re-enabled periodic refreshes of the SmartWeatherStation Tile. Users had reported that the Tile often showed stale information.

Addition of a Tools Tile for links to special functions.

  • It is no longer necessary to manually modify your dashboard URL with “css” or “list” to get web browser access to the Customize CSS and Arrange Tiles (Tile Order) functions. We have added a new Tools “…” Tile that will pop-up a menu of these functions *and more*.
    It looks like this:
    ToolsTile

Password login sessions: Phasing out use of Access Tokens.

  • Use of the access_token= parameter in the URL for SmartTiles dashboards has always been a great convenience that comes with a bit of security compromise.
  • We emphasize that users should not use or bookmark a tokenized URL on insecure devices. While folks avoid sending passwords in email, it is nearly as important to avoid sending tokenized URLs. We also remind users that they can invoke the “Revoke Access Token” function from the dashboard configuration Preferences / Security page in the SmartThings App at anytime, and users can also choose to leave off the access_token from their URLs to force require an SmartThings login.
  • Out of an abundance of caution, particularly due to the recent extra attention and response to SmartThings security researchers, we decided it is best to completely phase out the ability to use OAuth access tokens with SmartTiles. Existing tokens will be automatically invalidated (revoked) within as little as a few days after the release of v5.8. We have worked closely with SmartThings to come up with the most practical alternative way to authenticate dashboard access. Our options were limited by the SmartThings platform and the design of SmartTiles V5.
  • Instead of the access_token based URL, dashboards will be given a new format of URL that will automatically redirect through a SmartThings IDE Login webpage. Any userid (email) + password linked to the same Account as your Dashboard will be valid — i.e., any login that is valid for the SmartThings native mobile App.
  • The unfortunate consequence of the elimination of access_token support is that you will no longer be able to share a dashboard without also creating or sharing a “Managed Account User”; i.e., an email and password. You may consider using a password manager (such as those built into your browser or an add-on like LastPass) to help make this a little less inconvenient.
  • Please note that the login session for a SmartTiles Dashboard will have full IDE/API access (i.e., full “logged-in” permission to access everything under http://graph.api.smartthings.com or your equivalent shard. This is an ironic increase in permissions that we have made SmartThings aware of. Granular security by individual users on an Account is a long outstanding feature that we hope comes to SmartThings soon; in the meantime, we have built this function into SmartTiles V6.
  • The login session will remain active: (a) until you Logout (using the Tools Tile shown above), (b) until the browser exits, or (c) until the session times-out due to inactivity. We have no control over the longevity of login sessions and apologize for the burden this may impose. (SmartTiles V6 will have an independent external login mechanism with configurable extended login durations and secure login cookies, etc.. We’re excited to provide these convenient features – and much, much more – in a few months!)
  • Users will have to update their URLs, bookmarks, home screen and/or desktop shortcuts accordingly. The URL for the SmartTiles Launcher with parameters for your Dashboard will be provided in the usual way from within the View Dashboard and URL page in the SmartTiles SmartApp configuration and on the new Tools Tile as shown above.
  • The SmartTiles Launcher URL will look similar to this. This will be the new page that you bookmark, pin, or share…

SmartTiles at SDC

It’s been a busy couple of months since the release of SmartTiles v5.7.0 in March. Alex Malikov came down from his home in Edmonton Canada to visit with Terry in San Francisco for a few days. We attended the Samsung Developers’ Conference and had some valuable meetings with SmartThings’s management and our developer advocates, Tim and Jody. We enjoyed a tour of the Palo Alto SmartThings headquarters and other San Francisco landmarks.

[Resolved] Cannot Create New Dashboards on Version v5.7.0-Blue edition

Resolved: May 17, 2016 – 2200h UTC. (Opened: May 11, 2016 – 0230h UTC)

Some SmartTiles users were encountering problems when they try to add/create a new Dashboard under the parent SmartApp “SmartTiles (Connect)” in the Dashboard List section. We think this may be caused by recent SmartThings platform updates and probably only affects users of the original “OAuth shared” edition of SmartTiles. These had a Version number of the form: v5.7.0-xx+006-Blue (instead of “+001” or “+002” with no suffix) and an icon color that is Blue.

Symptoms include:

  • On iOS: When you press the “>” symbol to add/create a new Dashboard, a spinner icon will appear for a few moments then disappear and nothing happens.

  • On Android and Windows Mobile: When you press the “>” symbol to add/create a new Dashboard, a red bar error will appear reading “You are not authorized to perform the requested operation.” and the back button must be pressed to return to SmartTiles (Connect).

Please do not Remove (uninstall) “SmartTiles (Connect)” unless you have no Dashboards you wish to keep: Removing will delete all of your dashboards under that instance/edition and their configurations cannot be recovered!

Official workaround / solution:

  1. Visit the SmartTiles Install Page and run installation again.

  2. You may then find you have 2 instances of “SmartTiles (Connect)” listed under your SmartApps. One will be the “+###-Blue” (e.g., v5.7.0+008-Blue or similar) shared edition with the above problem, the other will be the “+002” (no suffix) published edition that we believe is functioning correctly at this time. You can create up to 5 Dashboards on this published edition and continue to use and modify any still functioning dashboards on the “+###-Blue” edition. You may choose to remove (uninstall) that “+###-Blue” edition to simplify your account; but see warning above: all dashboards will be permanently removed too!

Both instances of “SmartTiles (Connect)” have the same name and similar icon; we changed the SmartTiles “shared OAuth” edition icon color to blue to help distinguish these two editions, and the Version number has a “-Blue” suffix now.

connect-icon-blue = original installations of “shared OAuth” edition of “SmartTiles (Connect) -Blue”; these installations are restricted from creating new dashboards — the option to Add a dashboard has been removed.

connect-icon[1] = newer installations; the “published” edition of “SmartTiles (Connect)”; these are not affected.

[Resolved] Outage: Post-Installation Problems

Resolved: April 22, 2016 – 2030h UTC. (Opened: April 17, 2016 – 1830h UTC)

SmartTiles is currently encountering problems when users try to find SmartTiles listed under “Installed SmartApp” in the SmartThings mobile App after apparent successful installation using our web install. We think this may be caused by recent SmartThings “Platform Updates”, and is affecting apps in addition to SmartTiles.

Symptoms include:

  • SmartTiles (and other SmartApps) may not appear in your Installed SmartApps list in the native SmartThings Mobile App immediately after installation.

  • Other similar behaviors (missing dashboards in Preferences / Configuration pages), that may or may not be the same issue.

  • SmartTiles may eventually finally appear in the Installed SmartApps list after “a few hours” without any user or support intervention required! If you got to the Installation Complete page here on the website but don’t see SmartTiles in your SmartApps list, then we recommend waiting and checking again every “few hours”.

Please do not uninstall SmartTiles. It is unlikely to resolve this problem.

[Resolved] Outage: SmartTiles Preferences / Configuration Errors

Confirmed Resolved

Resolved: April 13, 2016 – 0600h UTC. (Opened: April 12, 2016 – 2100h UTC)

SmartTiles is currently encountering problems. We think they may be caused by SmartThings “Platform Updates” in progress, but this is unconfirmed speculation at this time.

Symptoms include:
  • Not able to access the preferences page – Error “You do not have permission to perform that action”
  • Unable to rename Dashboard – Error “You do not have permission to perform that action”
  • Spinners when attempting to enter various other Preferences / Configuration pages, including “View Dashboard”.
  • Inconsistent / odd data in the IDE pages under My Locations / Installed SmartApps / SmartTiles ...

Please do not uninstall SmartTiles. It is unlikely to resolve this problem.

[Resolved]: SmartTiles Installer Enabled including new Region (NA02 Cloud Shard)

The SmartTiles Installer was re-enabled; but new installations will may not be possible on and after April 12th, 2016.

SmartThings has partially resolved the platform / system issues mentioned in the previous two posts. They have added a new server cluster (AKA a “cloud shard”) with address “https://graph-na02-useast1.api.smartthings.com/“, and we have updated the SmartTiles Installer to support this.

We are not certain how or which SmartThings Accounts are being assigned to the new Region-Shard, but perhaps it is used for all for new SmartThings customers, or customers who have deleted and now recreated their Accounts.

Regardless, it does not hurt to try multiple installation attempts, each time using a different choice of Region-Shard on the Installation Options Screen. The new option is the second one (see picture below).

Urgent Deadline Alert (updated)

SmartThings has informed us that they are making changes to the way that third-party web services SmartApps are  authorized and installable. The deadline was originally set for February 1, 2016, but was postponed and changes are now scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2016 April 12, 2016. This means that it will not be possible to install SmartTiles via our web installer on or after that date. Existing dashboards are expected to continue to function.

SmartTiles has been submitted for publication in the SmartThings In-App “Marketplace” and is currently going through their QA Review Process. We hope that the interruption to the ability to add SmartTiles to your account is minimized, but we have no ETA at this time. Check back here for updates and follow SmartTiles’s Twitter feed: @SmartTiles

Note: It is very important that you do not “Remove / Uninstall” the “SmartTiles (Connect)” SmartApp from your Account Locations, since, for an indeterminate period, there will be no way for you to reinstall it.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we navigate SmartThings’s turbulent waters.

[Resolved] SmartThings platform bug causing SmartTiles Dashboard Creation Error

Due to errors being returned from the SmartThings cloud platform, the SmartTiles Installer is currently unavailable, as of March 20th & 25th, 2016. There is no estimated resolution date/time.

Further Details:

Users who have SmartTiles Connect (the “parent” SmartApp) installed are reporting that SmartThings’s native mobile App is hanging or crashing when attempting to create a new dashboard (a new “child” SmartApp instance). This has been reported for several other Community Developed SmartApps as well, such as Rule Machine.

SmartThings is aware of the issue and is investigating. Details of the bug have been determined, not the root cause nor possible resolutions.

SmartTiles.click First Anniversary

On March 9, 2015, Alex Malikov wrote:

It’s hard to believe how quickly time flies… ActiON Dashboard (aka SmartTiles v5.0.0) was in the making for over 6 months. It started as a curiosity, just a toy. It grew with demand, and evolved with the SmartThings community. Driven by the overwhelming support of the community, I envisioned a product that would augment the SmartThings platform with an elegant and accessible user interface. The software that is released today is a product of the entire community, hundreds of users who gave it a chance, provided feedback and tested it in every way imaginable.

Thank you, SmartThings Community!

And here we are, one year later…

SmartTiles is going strong with Version 5.7 released last week; still building upon the original vision and still inspired by the ideas and support of the SmartThings Community. This is the anniversary of the day we launched the SmartTiles.click website and the super convenient and growth boosting “web based install service“.

We now have thousands of users — with up to 5 unique dashboards each! Some dashboards just contain a carefully selected few device tiles given to younger family members so they can’t get into smart home mischief; some are specialized views of all the home’s temperature sensors, battery levels, or security cameras; and some users have shared snapshots of dashboards with over 100 Tiles — the ultimate all-in-one control panel!

SmartTiles has gone from looking like this:

dashboard-v1

To looking like these:

(And many, many variations shared by enthusiastic users and hackers in the SmartTiles Dashboard Theming and Mounting Ideas Community Topic). The search for “perfect” hardware and mounting options continues … while we remain proud that SmartTiles runs on most old smartphones, desktop and TV browsers, and even $40 discount tablets. (Note: The last photo is just one example of what users have accomplished with clever use of Custom CSS to tune and tweak the standard Themes).

What’s Next?

Keep in touch with us over in the SmartThings Community. We’ll keep listening to your feature suggestions, smushing little bugs, admiring your mounts and themes, and pouring lots of effort into the big “V6” overhaul that you’ve heard us hint about many times. We can’t share details until they’re ready… So today we pause and raise a glass in toast to this anniversary, our users, and our generous donors.

Sincerely,

Alex Malikov and Terry Gauchat.

Release Notes, Version 5.7.0

Overview

Minor bug fixes and new features. Further details, support and discussion at SmartThings Community Topic: SmartTiles Dashboard v5.7.0

Release v5.7.0 being deployed starting Wednesday March 2nd, 2016

You will receive the update automatically.

Features:

  • Option to add unlimited “Blank Tiles” (aka: “spacer tiles” or “Tile Separators”) to your layout and arrange them among traditional tiles. These are invisible (and non-clickable) in the Dashboard but can be used for esthetic purposes. To delete any Blank Tiles, use the “Tile Arrangement” function. Further documentation on how to use this feature will follow, but give it a try and let us know what you think and questions you have.

  • Related to “Blank Tiles”, “Device Order” has been renamed to “Tile Arrangement”. You can access the Tile Arrangement page from inside the SmartApp configuration pages, or by temporarily replacing “/ui” in your full Dashboard URL with “/list”, as in: https://graph.api.smartthings.com/api/smartapps/installations/<your_SmartTiles_AppID_from_the_Dashboard_URL>/list ...

  • 24 hour clock format option (vs. 12 hour clock with AM/PM).

  • Static assets (some icons, javascript, css) moved to Firebase by Google (instead of GitHub) for improved performance and reliability. Access of this data is currently not tracked to individual dashboards.

Fixes:

  • All SmartThings schedule related methods removed. Refreshes are handled entirely through JavaScript to isolate SmartTiles from some types of bugs (update/uninstall) whose root cause was traced to scheduler.

  • URI for Stop Motion Video fixed so that “rand” parameter appendage should no longer throw syntax error from some particular video sources.

  • Switch, Light, Dimmer, Lock “toggle” endpoints replaced with with explicit “on/off” (“lock/unlock”) to slightly improve behavior consistency. State of a Tile should always imply what Command will be sent to the Thing.

  • AJAX cache for Internet Explorer disabled.

Release Notes, Version 5.6.0

Release v5.6.0 was deployed Friday December 11th, 2015.

Minor new features and bug fixes.

Latest general info on SmartTiles is currently posted on SmartThings Community (no login required).

New Features

  • Internal security handling updated per latest updated SmartThings documentation for Access Token Handling.
  • Removed SMS (text message) “send URL” option. SMS is a security risk in case wrong phone number is input, etc.
  • Under “More Tiles” configuration, you can now activate a SHM – Smart Home Monitor pop-up Tile (similar to Mode Tile).
  • Log Level setting (for diagnostic output to IDE Live Logging: US or UK) added under “Preferences” (defaults to “error” only).
  • Added “sballoz” Theme (courtesy of @sballoz).
  • Tile order can now be edited outside of the SmartTiles “SmartApp configuration pages” by going to URL: https://graph.api.smartthings.com/api/smartapps/installations/<your_SmartTiles_AppID_from_the_Dashboard_URL>/list
  • Custrom CSS can now be edited outside of the SmartTiles “SmartApp configuration pages” by going to URL: https://graph.api.smartthings.com/api/smartapps/installations/<your_SmartTiles_AppID_from_the_Dashboard_URL>/css

Other Updates & Bug Fixes

  • Video Tiles can now be deleted/hidden by putting anything in URL that doesn’t start with “http” (currently must be lowercase — case insensitive fix being deployed soon). This now permit hiding (essentially deleting) an unused Video Tile just by masking its URL (even temporarily); e.g., “xhttp://my.videofeed.com/video.cgi“. NB: The native SmartThings App on Android still has a bug preventing users from completely blanking out a preference input field. This URL syntax filter is the recommended workaround we have implemented in the meantime.
  • Fixed fatal error that occurs if an Account/Location has invalid or missing Routines list. Error message is written to Live Logging; so if you have enabled “Routines Tile”, but it is not working, please check the Live Log. We believe that Routines / Phrases data problems are also a SmartThings bug which you should report to Support@SmartThings.com.

The multi-dashboard parent SmartApp SmartTiles (Connect) can only be installed via http://SmartTiles.click/install

Single dashboard legacy versions (e.g., v5.4.2) that were installed via SmartTiles.click website, will be updated automatically Sun Dec 13, 2015. They will continue to appear as a standalone SmartApp instance separate from SmartTiles (Connect).

SmartTiles v5.5

Overview

connect-icon[1]Converted to parent/child style SmartApp named “SmartTiles (Connect)“, which gives users the ability to create up to 5 distinct SmartTiles dashboards per Location. Terry Joins SmartTiles

SmartTiles News has been low on updates for a few months, but we’ve been busy beavers 🍁 behind the scenes.

Who’s “we”? Well, yours truly, Terry Gauchat has joined the founding team of SmartTiles. I’m responsible for operations, communications, marketing, and user relations. If there’s SmartTiles news, you’ll likely get it from me.

Alex is keeping his nose to the keyboard working on SmartTiles Version 6. This will include a major replacement of the engine that drives the app; significantly improving performance and security. He is also adding a nifty browser based tool for installing and configuring your dashboards. Very engrossing work, so I’m here to cover a lot of the day-to-day stuff: user support, emergency debugging, listening to feature requests, and helping make design decisions.

But no holding your breath out there! — We are not announcing a release date for Version 6 until it is ready with the high quality you expect. There will be a Beta test period with exclusive invites going to our donors first (the average donation is $20): Donations are super appreciated as we are facing new hosting and administrative expenses. There’s no need for a fancy crowdfunding campaign; we’re just passing around an electronic hat for you to show some love. Help take SmartTiles to the next level as the premiere SmartThings extension for convenient smart home control (the #1 Community developed SmartApp)! 🙏

  • We’ve added Square SquareCash Cash, a free & secure debit/ATM card transfer option — An alternative to the continued availability of our PP_Acceptance_Marks_for_LogoCenter_76x48[1] PayPal donation link.
  • First time Cash App users can earn both you & us a $5 bonus: Install the Square Cash App (links: Android or Apple iOS); Enter Reward Code TLDTCST at the bottom of Settings screen; Then PAY a donation to $SmartTilesDonations.
  • If you don’t want to install the Cash App (no referral bonus) — no problem … just use our direct web Cashtag link instead (please put your email address in the Optional Note) https://cash.me/$SmartTilesDonations

Can we talk?

As the guy in charge of communications, it’s no surprise that you can find me in many places (and growing):

SmartTiles V5.4

V5.4 is mostly a maintenance release to address SmartThings platform changes, clean up some code, styles and lay groundwork for future updates.

Functional changes include improvements to video and thermostat tiles.

Please note, you may need to rearrange video tiles after this update.
